Star Wars meets ‘suiboku-ga’ ink wash painting in art performance

Amid the pounding sound of Japanese drums, Darth Vader gradually emerged on a large canvas at an event that brought new meaning to the phrase “performance art” in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward.

At first, the artist only depicted a shadow of the figure, then, he started to draw with powerful brush strokes to breathe life into Darth Vader.

Onlookers watching the performance gave a round of applause when the artist completed his artwork 20 minutes after he began.

“I wanted to depict different aspects of Darth Vader’s character–not only cool or bad but also something different,” said the Kyoto-based artist, who is a fan of Darth Vader.
