Peek Inside Kumamoto Castle Shows Massive Damage

In a glimpse of the difficult reconstruction ahead, video images of the interior of the main keep of Kumamoto Castle, released for the first time since powerful earthquakes in April, showed damage “worse than expected.”

The footage, released recently by the Kumamoto city government, showed that the inside of stone walls beneath the Kumamoto Castle tower had collapsed at many sites.

Toshihiko Tsurushima, 61, who shot the 15-minute video in September, said he could hardly make his way through the debris.

Tsurushima, who is in charge of protecting cultural properties at the Kumamoto Castle Research Center, added that the inside of stone walls that is not visible from outside of the building was “almost completely destroyed.”
